Flavio G. Rocha, MD, FACS, FSSO
The Nordic HPB congress in Helsinki is very pleased to have Professor Flavio G. Rocha joining the upcoming event. On Thursday before lunch Dr Rocha will hold a state-of-the-art lecture entitled: “Treatment of locally advanced pancreatic cancer.”
Dr. Rocha is the Hedinger Professor and Chair of Surgical Oncology at Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) in Portland, OR. He also serves as the Physician-in-Chief of the Knight Cancer Institute at OHSU. He graduated with honors from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. After training in general surgery at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School both in Boston, he completed both a surgical oncology and hepatopancreatobiliary surgery fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. He spent ten years practicing in Seattle prior to moving to Oregon in 2021. Dr. Rocha’s clinical practice encompasses all aspects of benign and malignant disease of the liver, bile ducts and pancreas. He has been funded by the AAS, NIH/NIDDK, ASCO and the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation.
Dr. Rocha currently sits on the editorial boards of Surgery, HPB, Annals of Surgical Oncology, and Journal of Surgical Oncology. He has served on the NCI Pancreas Task Force, ASCO Gastrointestinal Cancers Advisory Council and ASTRO Liver Cancer Guidelines Committee. He is currently the surgical lead of the International Cholangiocarcinoma Research Network (ICRN), Vice-Chair of the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG) Surgery Committee, GI Surgery Working Group Chair at Eastern Cooperative Group (ECOG-ACRIN) and Chair of the Cancer Standards Development Committee at the American College of Surgeons.
Roland Andersson

Akseli Bonsdorff, M.D., Ph.D.
Akseli Bonsdorff is a first year surgical resident and clinical researcher based in Helsinki and Jyväskylä. He focuses on gastrointestinal and pancreatic surgery, combining clinical work with research on improving outcomes after surgery. Akseli is part of the team behind the DISPAIR-FRS fistula risk score and has received national recognition for his research in the field.
Adj.Prof Ville Sallinen
Adj.Prof Ville Sallinen works as a senior consultant HPB/Transplant surgeon at Helsinki University Hospital and leads a research group focused on improving recovery from surgery and minimizing complications through international randomized controlled trials and large collaborative research consortiums. He has published nearly 300 articles, many in the top-ranking journals such as Lancet, JAMA Surgery, BJS and J Hepatol. Ville has been Editor-in-Chief of BJS Open since 2021, and has formerly worked as an editor in Scandinavian Journal of Surgery and as an editorial assistant in BJS. He currently sits in the Board of Directors of International Gastrointestinal Surgery Workshop – DavosCourse, and is the vice president of the Finnish Surgical Society.
Associate Professor Christian Sturesson
Associate Professor Christian Sturesson is an academic hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgeon at Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden, specializing in advanced oncologic surgery. He completed his HPB surgical training at Lund University Hospital, Sweden, and through fellowships at Amsterdam University Medical Center, Copenhagen University Hospital, and Nagoya University Hospital. His primary research focus is on patient outcomes following resection of biliary tract cancers.
